Did you know....

Did you know...

If shop mannequins were real women, they'd be too thin to menstruate.
There are 3 billion women who don't look like supermodels ...and 8 who do.
Marilyn Monroe wore between a size 12 and a size 16.
If Barbie were a real woman, she'd have to walk on all fours due to her proportions.
The average American woman weighs 144 lbs. and wears between a size 12 and 14.
One out of every 4 college-aged women has an eating disorder.
The models in the magazines are airbrushed: they are not perfect!
A psychological study in 1995 found that 3 minutes spent looking at models in a fashion magazine caused 70% of women to feel depressed, guilt and shameful.
Twenty years ago models weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today they weigh 23% less.

I don't mean to be sarcastic, but so? These are the realities of the world we live in. I think part of recovery is finding how to not invest ourselves in today's media-hyped culture that tells us we're not good enough. The question is how to go about doing that...

Thank you for your comment, it is provocative, not sarcastic. Part of how we can resist being affected by the media is by looking critically at it, understanding the motives and influences that lie underneath advertizing, fashion, women's magazines, etc. Another option is to avoid these whenever possible and expose ourselves instead to body positive messages from alternative media or by creating alternative media ourselves. (See Anad.org and Somethingfishy.org for positive websites.) Equally important is to surround ourselves with strong, like-minded people who reinforce our true, unique inner and outer beauty.
